The translation is an adaptation that cuts and mutilates the original text, rearranging it in chapters that are not based on the German original, which followed the sequence of performances at the Nationaltheater in Hamburg, but on the most important plays reviewed by Lessing (the 60 plays of the original are reduced to 15 in the translation). This diminishes the anedoctic aspect, evocative of the life and traditions of the theater, which is the peculiar trait of the Hamburgische Dramaturgie.

We point out the probable existence of an edition dated 1783 (Paris, Junker, 1783).
