VARIANT OF THE TITLE: Remarques sur la musique & la danse, ou Lettres de Mr. G... à Milord P
The pamphlet, which came out in the summer of 1773, includes the first two of the twelve critical letters on Italian music and dance that Ange Goudar published anonymously or under the name of his wife Sara between 1773 and 1776.
The first letter contains a list of the fads common in the Italian musical environment as well as an analysis of the styles of several musicians and singers, whom Goudar asks to return to simplicity.
The second letter deals with ballet, specifically the comparison between Goudar's impressions of the performances he saw in Venice and Padua between 1772 and 1773 and the statements found in the writings of Noverre and Angiolini.
LATER EDITIONS:
The letter on music led to the publication of a satirical pamphlet (Paolo Manzin, All'autore delle Osservazioni in lingua francese sopra la musica, e la danza in Italia cicalata di Paolo Manzin, Venezia, Carlo Palese, 1773), in response to which Goudar wrote Supplément aux Remarques sur la musique et la danse, ou Lettres de M. G... à Milord Pembroke, Venise, C. Palese, 1773 (Lettres III-IX).

The Remarques were included in the second book of Oeuvres mêlées de Madame Sara Goudar, angloise, Amsterdam, s.n., 1777, 2 books in 1 vol.
TRANSLATIONS:
The Remarques were translated into Italian and prepared for printing at Carlo Palese in 1773, but the text remained in manuscript form (Osservazioni sopra la Musica, ed il Ballo o siano Lettere di Mr. G. a Milord Pembroke. Trasportate dal Francese da F.T. (see)). The manuscript, currently in Bologna, besides the translation of the Remarques included also that of the Supplément. (See Carmela Lombardi, edited by, Il ballo pantomimo: lettere, saggi e libelli sulla danza (1773-1785), Torino, Paravia, 1998, pp. 7-9).
Presumably in the same year a new Italian translation was published: Osservazioni sopra la musica, ed il ballo ossia Estratto di due lettere di Mr. G... a Milord P... Tradotte dal francese, Milano, Gaetano Motta, [1773] (see). |
