ABSTRACT

There is no doubt that the force and originality of the theatrical research carried out by Ariane Mnouchkine and her company lies in the acting. From the start, the French producer focused on body language, developing through the years a very personal and empirical method to test on stage the various theatrical theories that inspired her, from Copeau to Vilar, to Brecht to the Oriental theatre. The study intends to outline the characteristics of Mnouchkine company’s acting methods through an analysis of the various steps of the process: improvisation, ‘visions’, the ‘evocation' of characters, the fact that actors had to ‘win the right’ to enact them. These methods always start from the concrete aspect of rehearsal and from repeated exercises in mask wearing and dual personality. The acting techniques of the Théatre du Soleil are analysed through a series of performances that inaugurate the success story of this mythical company.
