The text was published in the London Magazine, or Gentleman's Monthly Intelligencer divided into three essays - «Essay I», «Essay II», «Essay III and last» - which appeared respectively in the months of August, September and October 1770.

The title «Remarks on the Profession of a Player» appeared only at the beginning of the first essay. Each essay also bears the title «On the Profession of a Player».
The last two essays are part of the series "The British Theatre".
