Notes	Online text: INTERNET ARCHIVE The publication of L'Art du Théâtre à MADAME *** by Antoine-François Riccoboni is the first explicit confutation of the emotionalist theory. The author questions the belief that the representation of a character necessarily requires an emotional identification by the actor, arguing that the effectiveness and naturalness of acting does not depend on the spontaneous expression of feelings. Actors do not need to really feel an emotion, but only to express it by imitating the external signs of that emotions. After the publication of the treatise various reviews, many of them anonymous, appeared in newspapers and periodicals.
