| Notes | Online text: INTERNET ARCHIVE The publication of L'Art du Théâtre à MADAME *** by Antoine-François Riccoboni is the first explicit confutation of the emotionalist theory. The author questions the belief that the representation of a character necessarily requires an emotional identification by the actor, arguing that the effectiveness and naturalness of acting does not depend on the spontaneous expression of feelings. Actors do not need to really feel an emotion, but only to express it by imitating the external signs of that emotions. After the publication of the treatise various reviews, many of them anonymous, appeared in newspapers and periodicals. Among these: 1) "L'Art du Théâtre A Madame *** par François Riccoboni", published in Mémoires pour l'Histoire des Sciences & des Beaux-Arts, Paris, Briasson & Chaubert, vol. II, Février 1750, pp. 512-532 (Article XXIX) (see). 2) Abbé Joseph de La Porte, "Le Comédien, Par M. Rémond de Sainte-Albine. L'Art du Théâtre, Par M. Riccoboni", published in Observations sur la Littérature moderne, La Haye, s.n., 1750, second tome, pp. 230-255 (see). 3) "L'Art du Théâtre, A Madame ***. Par François Riccoboni", published in the section "Nouvelles Littéraires, des Beaux-Arts, &c." of the Mercure de France, Paris, André Cailleau, La Veuve Pissot, Jean de Nully, Jacques Barrois, Mars 1750, pp. 170-175 (see). In response to these articles François Riccoboni wrote his Lettre de Mr Riccoboni, fils, à Monsieur R*** au sujet de l'Art du Théâtre (see).
