The work, published anonymously, was initially attributed to Anton Fabio Sticotti and later, more convincingly, to Michel Sticotti (Claudio Meldolesi, Gli Sticotti: comici italiani nei teatri d'Europa, Roma, Edizioni di Storia e Letteratura, 1969).

Translation and adaptation of The Actor by John Hill (see), in turn a translation and adaptation of the second edition of Le Comédien by Rémond de Sainte-Albine (see).
Diderot attacked Sticotti's text in «Sur une brochure intitulée Garrick ou les acteurs anglais» published in the Correspondance littéraire of 1770 (see). The article is the original nucleus of Paradoxe sur le comédien (see).
