With this texts and the later Dissertations on Theatrical Subjects (1756) (see), Cibber wanted to criticize the monopoly of licensed theaters and carried out a violent attack, both on a professional and personal level, on Garrick who was at the time the manager of the Drury Lane.

LATER EDITIONS:
The Epistle was included in the appendix of the 1756 edition of the Dissertations.
The two texts were published together in the following editions:
