ABSTRACT
The essay addresses developments in theatrical iconography/iconology since 2010, considering both the new perspectives emerging in theatre studies and the new approach to the iconography/iconology of performing arts imposed by digital culture and intermedial practices. In order to assess the current landscape of studies and the ways in which the heritage of images is being developed today, the essay focuses on contexts that are particularly responsive to the major transformations introduced by digital culture in its cognitive and imaginative, creative and participatory, dialogic and multimedia dimensions. The strategies adopted by certain museums and collections are examined (the Theatermuseum - Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Istituto per il Teatro e il Melodramma - Fondazione Cini, and the Folger Shakespeare Library), as well as research and experiences concerning stage costume viewed from the perspective of the material culture of theatre, in relation to fashion, and finally as an exhibition object and an agent of performance (with particular attention to the French experience). The second part of the essay specifically addresses the iconographic method and analyses several recent contributions (exhibitions, conferences, and essays) concerning Adelaide Ristori, Sarah Bernhardt and Eleonora Duse, actresses who, during the nineteenth century, represented different ways of constructing their own iconic identities through the use of fashion and images.
