Dopo aver svolto per diversi anni la professione di attore Davies si dedicò a quella di libraio. La sua conoscenza ed esperienza dell'ambiente teatrale del tempo confluì nelle Memoirs of the Life of David Garrick, testo che gli procurò grande fama e un buon ritorno economico, e nei tre volumi delle Dramatic Miscellanies (1783-1784) (vedi) che contengono interessanti aneddoti riguardanti il teatro e gli attori.
