Dopo aver svolto per diversi anni la professione di attore, Davies si dedicò a quella di libraio. La sua conoscenza ed esperienza dell'ambiente teatrale del tempo confluì nelle Memoirs of the Life of David Garrick del 1780 (vedi), testo che gli procurò grande fama e un buon ritorno economico, e nei tre volumi delle Dramatic Miscellanies che contengono interessanti aneddoti riguardanti il teatro e gli attori.
