Nel primo volume (pp. 358-370) è riportato The Art and Duty of an Actor (vedi), dagli appunti di Macklin per una serie di conferenze-lezioni sulla storia del teatro e sulla recitazione da tenere alla British Inquisition, una sorta di accademia fondata dallo stesso Macklin a Londra, in Hart Street, nel 1754. Macklin avrebbe poi esposto la propria teoria della recitazione in un manoscritto intitolato The Science of Acting che sarebbe andato perduto in mare in un naufragio nel 1771 (vedi vol. II, pp. 46-47).
