La prima versione di venti versi si trova nel numero 113 (Tuesday, December 9, 1735) del «Prompter», bisettimanale edito da Aaron Hill insieme a William Popple dal novembre 1734 al luglio 1736. I versi pubblicati sul periodico furono estesi successivamente a ottanta in un altro poemetto, ugualmente intitolato The Actor's Epitome e pubblicato postumo nel quarto volume (pp. 76-80) di The Works of the Late Aaron Hill, Esq.; In Four Volumes. Consisting of Letters on Various Subjects, And of Original Poems, Moral and Facetious, With an Essay on the Art of Acting (London, Printed for the Benefit of the Family, 1753; seconda edizione: London, Printed for the Benefit of the Family, 1754).
