Spinto dalla volontà di promuovere una riforma generale del sistema educativo britannico che, a suo avviso, trascurava la dizione e la declamazione, nel 1762 Thomas Sheridan pubblicò A Course of Lectures on Elocution (vedi), cui fecero seguito A Plan of Education (1769), Lectures on the Art of Reading (1775), e A General Dictionary of the English Language (1780). Nel 1770 fondò inoltre a Bath l'Academy for the Regular Instruction of Young Gentlemen in the Art of Reading and Reciting and Grammatical Knowledge of the English Tongue. Sheridan sosteneva che lo studio della dizione - riguardante non solo l'impostazione della voce, ma anche espressioni facciali, gesti, posture e movimenti - e la padronanza delle sue regole potesse assicurare la perfezione in tutte arti.

L'opera è divisa in due parti comprese in due volumi. La prima è consacrata a The Art of Reading Prose, la seconda a The Art of Reading Verse.
