Leigh Hunt si era occupato di critica teatrale scrivendo, negli anni tra il 1805 e il 1807, per il «News». Continuò ad occuparsene attraverso gli articoli pubblicati sia sui periodici da lui diretti, come l'«Examiner», il «Chat of the Week» e il «Tatler», sia in altri come il «Times» o il «True Sun». Con i Critical Essays - che raccoglie i saggi di critica teatrale pubblicati sul  «News» - si rivelano appieno i tratti distintivi del suo stile attento a cogliere «details of an actor's performance and stage direction» (Cfr. Michael Eberle-Sinatra, Leigh Hunt and the London Literary Scene: A Reception History of his Major Works, 1805-1828, New York and London, Routledge, 2005, p. 15).
Il testo è organizzato in capitoli dedicati ciascuno a un differente attore o attrice. In appendice sono esposte le Rules for the Theatrical Critic of a Newspaper, pubblicate originariamente sul «News» il 25 maggio 1806. Alla fine presenta il Prospectus of The Examiner, A New Sunday Paper.
