Hazlitt rilegge i passaggi più celebri delle opere shakespeariane, annotando limiti e pregi degli attori più acclamati sulle scene londinesi: David Garrick, John Philip Kemble, Sarah Siddons, Edmund Kean. 
Hazlitt incorporò nel volume materiale tratto dalla sua vivace produzione di recensioni teatrali e saggi (come, ad esempio, dalla serie The Round Table, pubblicata a partire dal 26 novembre 1815 su «The Examiner» e apparsa in forma di raccolta nello stesso 1817). Scontento del modo in cui The Round Table era stato promosso dal suo editore, Hazlitt iniziò a promuovere i Characters facendo pubblicare il capitolo su Hamlet sul «Times» e chiedendo a Francis Jeffrey, direttore dell'«Edinburgh Review» di pubblicare una recensione del testo sul suo periodico. Diverse copie iniziarono inoltre a circolare in forma privata. Infine, il 9 luglio 1817, Hazlitt riuscì a far pubblicare i Characters da Rowland Hunter e dai fratelli Charles e James Ollier.

EDIZIONI SUCCESSIVE:
Una seconda edizione venne pubblicata da Taylor e Hessey nel 1818 (London, Taylor & Hessey, 1818). Nello stesso anno un'edizione senza licenza venne pubblicata a Boston da Wells e Lilly.
