L'Essay, rimasto incompiuto, è stato pubblicato postumo nel 1753 nel quarto volume (pp. 353-414) di The Works of the Late Aaron Hill, Esq.; In Four Volumes. Consisting of Letters on Various Subjects, And of Original Poems, Moral and Facetious, With an Essay on the Art of Acting (London, Printed for the Benefit of the Family, 1753; seconda edizione: London, Printed for the Benefit of the Family, 1754).

L'Essay rappresenta il punto d'arrivo delle teorizzazioni dell'autore sulla recitazione. Nel testo Aaron Hill analizza, utilizzando come esempi alcuni passaggi tratti da drammi noti, dieci passioni già elencate in precedenti testi, indicando il metodo per evocarle attraverso uno stimolo meccanico per cui, nel momento in cui l'immaginazione concepisce l'idea della passione, il corpo è condotto ad adattarsi meccanicamente all'emozione.

Nel corso del XIX secolo apparvero diverse edizioni dell'Essay, molto probabilmente piratate, recanti differenti titoli:

- The Actor; or, Guide to the Stage; exemplifying the whole Art of Acting: in which the Dramatic Passions are defined, analyzed, and made easy of Acquirement. The whole interspersed with Select and Striking Examples from the most popular Modern Pieces, London, John Lowndes, 1821 (vedi).
- The Art of Acting; or, Guide to the Stage: in which the Dramatic Passions are Defined, Analyzed, and made Easy of Acquirement, New York, Samuel French, 1855 (vedi).
