ABSTRACT
The essay proposes the use of the expression epic performance in theater studies as a label for transversally comparing the various acting and relation modalities involving the presentation of a mainly narrative content to a public. The central part of the study is a comparative analysis on narrative theater performances of the 1990s and more recent epic performances by journalists, writers and scientists. The essay examines the differences and similarities between these two trends. Similarities include the tendency to use meaningful discourse, the importance of the structure of discourse, the ‘living drama of verbal thought,’ the use of everyday behavior and the tendency to be oneself on stage. Differences include the integration of vocality and orality, the use of mental images and inner perception, the combination of epic and drama, the awareness of the body: elements that are all typical of the theater of narrative actors. In the last section, the essay examines the relation between historical events and various trends in epic performances: while there is no direct link between the historical background and these theatrical currents, these do represent a response to the need of people to find meaning and to understand one’s context. The essay also identifies various currents in the narrative theater of the 1990s, developing from the ‘narrative dramas’ of the previous decade.
BIOGRAFIA
Gerardo Guccini è Professore di Drammaturgia al DAMS dell'Università degli studi di Bologna. Nel 1995 ha fondato con Claudio Meldolesi la rivista “Prove di Drammaturgia” che attualmente dirige. Ha dedicato diversi studi al teatro di narrazione curando, tra l'altro, i numeri monografici di "Prove di drammaturgia" Per una nuova performance epica (2004), Ai confini della performance epica (2005) e il volume La bottega dei narratori. Storie, laboratori e metodi di Marco Baliani, Ascanio Celestini, Laura Curino, Marco Paolini, Gabriele Vacis, Roma, Dino Audino Editore, 2005. Si è occupato inoltre di teatro d'opera scrivendo diversi saggi su volumi e riviste tra cui Verdi regista: una drammaturgia fra scrittura e azione, in JeanJaques Nattiez, Enciclopedia della musica.
