Lessing's initial intent was to write a complete translation of Le Comédien by Remond de Sainte Albine (see), but he gave up because the references in the treatise were to French plays never staged in Germany and therefore the treatise would have been of little help to German actors. Lessing decided instead to write a critical compendium of the French treatise and published it in his collection of writings Theatralische Bibliothek.
